| Karate is meditation in motion. Bringing the mind, body and spirit together through focusing your energy on body movement; footwork in coordination with sophisticated timing and hand movements. Balance in combination with turning, evading and trapping. The literal translation of Karate means “empty hand”. As a result, this has become the common, limiting definition of this ancient art. The symbol kara, however, is also used to describe vastness, and endlessness, used in the Japanese words for space and sky. So it would be more appropriate and accurate to refer to karate as infinite hands, or vastness of hands. Think of the importance of hands in ancient societies, or even in today’s society. In this way, karate training will carry over into every day life.A wise and ancient people specifically designed the movements in karate. These movements, like the term itself, have vast and infinite number of applications. To reduce these motions to simple blocking and striking, or any other single aspect, only limits the abilities and vision of the practitioner. Anyone can practice karate. A common perception of karate is that it is nothing more than strikes and blocks. This requires the practitioner to be stronger than their opponent, limiting who can practice effectively. However, because of subtler techniques hidden in karate movements, anyone can effectively defend themselves with proper training. These subtler techniques rely on proper footwork, timing, leverage and pressure point manipulation and can be mastered by anyone, regardless of size, age or physical stature. One of the most beautiful aspects of karate is that an individual can get whatever they wish out of karate practice, whether it be an intense conditioning workout, a gentle meditative "dance", practical self-defense or anything else. | Also Available: Self-Defense Classes Contact us for details!
